Black Lizard Stamped Leather Edouard Lug Shoes from Jacques Solovière are a lace-up lug-sole derby in black calfskin, stamped with a lizard-skin pattern and set on a matching black sole. The Edouard Lug is the Paris label's minimalist city shoe, inspired by what the brand calls the vagabond lifestyle. It pairs a clean, rounded derby shape with a chunky rubber lug sole, and the all-black finish lets the texture of the lizard print do the talking.

The upper is calfskin leather, embossed with a lizard-scale pattern. The print gives the leather depth and a subtle sheen without the cost or care of exotic skins, and in black it reads as sharp and polished rather than loud. Inside, the shoe is lined in leather with a leather insole. Leather breathes and moulds to your foot over time, so the shoe gets more comfortable the more you wear it.

Underneath is a black synthetic lug sole with a micro-tread pattern for grip on wet pavements and cobbles, plus a double-stitched welt for a durable, clean construction line. With the sole matching the upper, the shoe has a sleek, tonal look from every angle. The heel is flat, so it's comfortable for a full day on your feet. The shoe is not warm-lined, so it works all year round rather than just in winter.

Black is the dressier of the Edouard Lug colourways and moves easily from day to evening. Wear it with black or grey denim, charcoal or navy wool trousers and tailoring, or with a black roll neck and an overcoat for a sharp all-dark look. At the weekend it works just as well with a chunky knit, an overshirt or a quilted jacket. It sits naturally with black, charcoal, grey, navy and cream.

Jacques Solovière is a Parisian footwear label launched in June 2014, known for modern takes on wardrobe staples such as derbies, loafers and slippers with clean lines and considered proportions. The Edouard Lug is made in Portugal and comes with a dust bag.

To care for it, wipe off dirt with a soft cloth and use a black leather cream or conditioner from time to time to keep the calfskin supple and the colour deep. The leather isn't waterproof, so if the shoes get wet, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry naturally, away from direct heat. Store them somewhere cool and dry, ideally in the dust bag, with shoe trees.
